Escandalo 2025 “Naranjo,” Pedro Ximenez, Choapa Valley, Chile

This wine is an anomaly amongst an anomaly. Although labeled as Pedro Ximenez, a grape famous in Spain for producing world renown, highly ageable Sherry as well as a small amount of dry white wine, the name of this varietal means something entirely different in Chile. Winemaker Maurico Veloso Estuardo explains that in Chile, the varietal name Pedro Ximenez applies to a crossing of Muscat and the native varietal Pais (See the diagram provided by Maurico below).

For this bottling, Maurico goes with 30 days of skin contact during fermentation leading to a finished wine that is soft but chalky in minerality with a pronounced citrus note reminiscent of “Tang” or “Sunny D.” We recommend serving this wine chilled with citrus marinated pork dishes like carnitas tacos.
